Student Work Permits

We would like to share important information regarding upcoming changes to the State of Michigan's youth work permit process that may impact students seeking employment during the school year and summer months. 

What Is Changing?  

Michigan recently enacted legislation that will transition the state's youth work permit system from the current school-based process to a centralized system administered by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO). Under the current system, schools such as AHS, THS, TCCHS or IA East would issue work permits to eligible students under age 18. Beginning October 1, 2026, work permits will be obtained through the State of Michigan's centralized process rather than through our high schools or the Troy School District. 

What Families Need to Know for the 2026-27 School Year  
 Until September 30, 2026: 

• Our High Schools will continue issuing work permits for eligible students under age 18.  

Beginning October 1, 2026: 

• Work permits will be processed through the State of Michigan's centralized system administered by LEO. 

• Students, parents, and employers should expect to use state-managed registration and permit procedures rather than obtaining permits from their school.  

We encourage families to review these resources periodically, as the state may provide additional guidance as the October 2026 implementation date approaches.
